ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION CONDEMNS HONOUR
KILLINGS

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly (SA) on Friday unanimously passed a
resolution condemning honour killings in the province.
Pakistan People’s Party legislator Farheen Mughul presented the resolution,
recommending that the provincial government should take special steps to
prevent honour killings.
She demanded that a murder case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Panel Code
should be lodged against the culprits. Honour killings are a global issue while
Lady Diana was also a victim of honour killing, she claimed.
Discussing the issue, MPAs said that although Sindh was the land of Sufis and
peace, some people with a negative mindset killed innocent girls usually to
occupy a piece of land or a share in the property or sometimes as revenge from
their rivals.
Terming honour killings as a form of targeted killings, they said that the
murderers involved in the crime should be given capital punishment.
SA Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza said the ratio of honour killings could be
decreased through proper imposition of law.
Holding the police department responsible for the rise in honour killings, she
suggested that women police desks should be established in areas where honour
killings cases were reported frequently.
Endorsing the resolution, Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro said the Sindh
government was already following the practice of lodging FIRs against people
involved in honour killings under Section 302.
Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro replied that why was the resolution tabled in the
session if the provincial government was already practicing this.
However, arguments from the female lawmakers forced the Speaker to rule out
voting and the resolution was passed unanimously.
The speaker deferred four bills including Sindh Shops and Establishments (Security)
Bill 2010, Colonisation of Government Lands (Amendment) Bill 2010, Shaheed
Benazir Bhutto University, Shaheed Benazirabad Bill 2009 and People’s
University of Medical Sciences and Health, Shaheed Benazirabad Bill 2009 for
reconsideration.
