PRLog (Press Release)Nov 14, 2010Alexandria, Egypt- 15 November 2010. Author Amira Nowaira has published her memoir Growing Up Feminist in a Muslim Land. This is the memoir of an Egyptian woman whose formative years between the ages of ten and twenty spanned the 1960s and were spent in Alexandria, Egypt. Although brought up traditionally in a Moslem Arabic-speaking middle-class family, she is exposed to different cultural and ideological influences, which at times clash, and more often merge, with her original culture. It is through this intricate mesh of cultural strands that she tries to construct her personal identity against a backdrop of political, ideological, and social upheavals. Witnessing first-hand the colossal changes that happened during this period and their impact on her life and on the structure of Egyptian society, she tries hard to make sense of her world and the worlds beyond it.

The memoir written in English is at once a personal journey and an investigation into the political and social construction of modern
Egypt. It casts a humorous, though at times a cynical, look at all those events, refusing to privilege one ideology over another or to pay homage to particular idols, figures or unquestioned modes of thinking. It privileges humanity over ideology and the living experience over the blind dictates of heritage.
While so many stories are told about women in the Arab world, very few Arab women have spoken in their own voices. Growing Up Feminist in a
Muslim Land provides a unique and intimate glimpse into the life of an Egyptian woman at an important period in her country’s turbulent history.
