Human settlements is a
field that encompasses many topics related to adequate shelter and
urbanization. The concept of human settlements implies a holistic way of
viewing shelter and urbanization, including the basic services, planning and
management that relate to ensuring adequate shelter. Crises such as disasters
and climate change impact adequate shelter, and needs such as good health,
livelihoods and secure land tenure are affected by the sustainability of
adequate shelter.
Within each of the themes, the documents and discussions on the portal will
focus on the gendered nature of the issues, the particular experience of women
in relation to the issues as well as the way that women are working as women to
confront the issues.
Women have an important
role to play in the attainment of sustainable human settlements.
Nevertheless, as a result of a number of factors, including the persistent and
increasing burden of poverty on women and discrimination against women, women
face particular constraints in obtaining adequate shelter and in fully
participating in decision-making related to sustainable human
settlements. The empowerment of women and their full and equal
participation in political, social and economic life, the improvement of health
and the eradication of poverty are essential to achieving sustainable human
settlements.
