RUSSIA - FEMINIST DEMONSTRATION IN
MOSCOW
TO SUPPORT WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY
On the 26th September, in Moscow, Russia, a demonstration was
organised to mark World Contraception Day. The event took place beside
the monument to Freidrich Engels near Kropotkinskaya Metro station, which lies
opposite the Church of Christ the Saviour, the largest Orthodox church in
Moscow. It was organised by the new feminist pressure group 'Za Feminism'
('pro Feminism'), who intend to organise more events in future to further the
cause of feminism in Russia, and was supported by the Committee for
International Labour, a feminist society and a secular pressure group on Live
Journal.
The purpose of the demonstration was to highlight the following causes and ideas:
- That contraception is the most effective way of combating abortion
- That sex education in Russian schools should highlight the importance of contraception
- That there should be more cultural awareness of contraception and that women should be encouraged to regard it as their right to insist upon contraception during sex
Some thirty activists distributed leaflets containing information about World Contraception Day, and also about different varieties of contraception.
