Equality and the Empowerment of Women
The 2010 AMR will turn the
spotlight on actions and progress made to achieve the global agenda on women’s
issues and to mainstream a gender perspective in all sectors. The Review aims
at promoting practical strategies to advance women’s participation as equal
partners and beneficiaries of sustainable development, peace and security,
governance and human rights.
· Victims of violence
against women must be supported, perpetrators punished – Ban
Violence against women devastates individuals and societies alike,
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today, calling for united action to demand
accountability, end impunity and support the victims of this global scourge.
· Progress on women’s
rights will help achieve global development goals – Migiro
Significant progress in realizing women’s rights is crucial to achieving
sustainable development and the globally agreed targets to slash poverty,
hunger, illiteracy and a host of other socio-economic ills, the Deputy
Secretary-General said today.
· Role models, along
with laws and policies, vital for empowering women – Ban
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today repeated his call for ending all forms of
discrimination against women and girls, stressing the need for not only
effective laws and policies but also women who can serve as examples of
empowerment to those around them.
· Women’s empowerment
lifts obstacles to achieving development goals, Ban says
3 March 2010 – More than a decade after world leaders agreed to
eliminate all forms of discrimination against women, their empowerment remains
a necessary element in attaining development targets, Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon said today.
· UNAIDS launches plan
to empower women and girls to prevent HIV
2 March 2010 – The lead United Nations agency tackling the AIDS
epidemic, along with rock and roll icon Annie Lennox, today launched an action
plan to empower women and girls to protect themselves against HIV.
· Deputy UN chief cites need to move
from commitment to action on gender equality
1 March 2010 – While there have been advances over the past 15 years
to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, there is still a clear
need to move from commitment to action in several key areas, the Deputy
Secretary-General said today at the start of a two-week United Nations meeting
on women.
