The Women PeaceMakers
Program
Joan B. Kroc
Institute for Peace & Justice
Fall Residency: September 12 – November 5, 2010
Applicants are invited to
participate in a residency program for women engaged in peacebuilding and human
rights. The Women PeaceMakers (WPM) Program at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for
Peace & Justice (IPJ) involves learning, teaching and taking the time to
narrate a personal, unique story of peacemaking. Along with scheduled time
when the Woman PeaceMaker will work one-on-one with her peace writer, there
will be programs in which she will share with others her experiences from her
respective country and conflict setting with others. She will learn from
and explore new skills and ideas with fellow PeaceMakers. Through better
understanding of individual human rights advocacy and peacebuilding work, the
program seeks to build greater cross-cultural understanding and to document the
challenges and successes of women who have been involved in peacemaking
efforts.
Those who are accepted into the
Fall 2010 program will be expected to spend eight weeks at the IPJ at the
University of San Diego (USD) in
·
Work together with a Peace Writer
to document stories
of your life and work.
·
Have your
experiences and personal stories captured on video and audiotape.
At the conclusion of the
program, each Woman PeaceMaker’s story will include written narratives, video
recording and audio taping. Written narratives and video clips will be
published and archived by the IPJ.
Please
read previous PeaceMaker narratives by visiting the Narratives page on the IPJ
Web site:

As part of the learning and teaching
process, Women PeaceMakers will have the opportunity to share their personal
histories and the work they are doing with a range of audiences at the
University of San Diego and from around San Diego and the region. A number of
presentations are scheduled before the Women PeaceMakers arrive, while others
are scheduled by the women themselves as university professors, local community
groups and others meet the women and invite them to speak to their
constituencies. Some of the key opportunities for the WPMs to discuss their
life and work include:
·
The WPMs’ role as women in
peacebuilding
·
Involvement of women in
official peacemaking processes generally
·
Gender-mainstreaming for
civil society development
·
Developing support systems
for women serving in leadership roles
·
Identification of
post-conflict issues that require women's input and participation
·
Establishing unbiased legal
or reconciliation processes
Women PeaceMaker Panel
At least once during the program, all
four Women PeaceMakers will present a highly anticipated panel discussion to
the USD and wider community. This evening presentation allows the Women
PeaceMakers’ stories to be told side-by-side, so that the similarities and
differences in the women’s context and experiences can be highlighted.
Public
Forums
Women PeaceMakers share
their experiences of peacemaking and human rights advocacy with the local
community through classroom presentations, visits to local governmental and
nongovernmental organizations, small group discussions and other public engagements.
Other Activities:
Participation
in “Precarious Progress: U.N. Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security”
September 29 – October 1, 2010
As part of the Women PeaceMakers Program, the IPJ will
convene its 2010 Women PeaceMakers conference, “Precarious Progress: U.N.
Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security.” The international working conference
will examine United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 1325, 1820,
1888 and 1889 as a backdrop to look at where new UNSCRs have had (can have) impact.
With women still alarmingly underrepresented in peace accords and continuously
targeted by armed groups and extremists, how do we move from resolution to
policy? Can UNSCRs truly be used for establishing security on the ground,
guiding reconciliation and refocusing the attention on gender and women’s
priorities and needs?
Urgent issues identified by past Women
PeaceMakers include confronting and working on genuine solutions to: abuse of
small arms; increasing cultures of impunity; military and civilian issues; and
the violations of the rights of migrants and IDPs. Considering the rampant
insecurity communities – and particularly women in those communities – continue
to face, more attention and action should be forthcoming given the resolutions
passed.
This conference will take advantage of
global action in preparation for the 10th anniversary of UNSCR 1325.
High-level representatives from U.N. agencies and advisory councils will
discuss recent breakthroughs made by member states and civil society to advance
women’s role in peace processes in preparation for the 10th
anniversary celebrations. Participants
will be encouraged to network with other women and men working in the
field.
Time outside of the
Program
During the
program, Women PeaceMakers engage in a full schedule of interviewing, speaking
engagements, professional networking and engagement with students on campus.
Time is intentionally built into this busy schedule for WPMs to savor some
rest, relaxation and reflection. Successful candidates should expect to be
involved with program activities throughout the two-month residency period in
