INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN'S STUDIES IN THE ARAB WORLD

CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACTS FOR AL-RAIDA PUBLICATION

Seeking Equality and Justice in the Family

The Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW), based in the Lebanese American University, is soliciting articles for the Winter 2011 issue of its quarterly publication Al-Raida. The central topic for this edition of the journal will be “Seeking Equality and Justice in the Family.”

Equality and justice in the family is the last major frontier in activist struggle in the Arab world. It is a commonplace that the family is the basic unit of society but as long as a patriarchal model of the family is sustained it subverts ideals of equality and justice, embedded in religions, which are fundamental to a democratic state and society across the public-private spectrum.

We are interested in receiving papers based on academic studies or critical essays that address concerns related to equality and justice in the family in the Arab World. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

If you are interested in contributing to this issue of Al-Raida, kindly send your abstract (250–300 words) by June 5, 2010.

All abstracts submitted are reviewed by Al-Raida’s editorial staff and are subject to its approval. Once the abstract is approved contributors will have to submit their paper no later than September 30, 2010. Submissions are accepted in English, Arabic or French. All non-English submissions will be translated by IWSAW and published in English following the approval of the author.

This journal edition will be edited by Dr. Margot Badran, Senior Fellow at the Prince Alwaleed ibn Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, DC. Kindly send your emails simultaneously to the managing editor, Ms. Myriam Sfeir, at al-raida@lau.edu.lb and to the guest editor, Dr. Margot Badran at mafbadran@post.harvard.edu.
