BAHRAIN - PROGRAM TO PROMOTE, SUPPORT FEMALE POLITICAL CANDIDATES

Khaleej Times - 07 May, 2010

A national programme to support women in this year’s municipal and parliamentary elections in Bahrain was launched here on Wednesday.

Women who met with a poor response in the previous two elections in Bahrain will be promoted through a host of activities, including training programmes, awareness campaigns and partnership deals.

General public will be informed about women’s participation through mobile phone messages, youth forums and networking sites such as facebook.

Bahrain has only one elected woman parliamentarian who was elected unopposed in 2006 from a constituency having relatively small population.

Organised by the state-run Supreme Council for Women (SCW) in association with the United Nations Development Programme, the National Political Empowerment of Women in Election aims to promote female candidates.

SCW’s Assistant General Secretary, Hala Al Ansari, told a press conference that the programme would offer support within the SCW’s capabilities. “Through the programme we want to promote women as suitable candidates who are able of creating positive changes.”

The programme is designed in line with the result of a study conducted by the SCW and UNDP on political empowerment of women.

Supporting women in the election is not a new move as in 2006 elections, women candidates were given training and provided with financial assistance for their election campaigns.

Al Ansari said women who took part in the previous elections will not be given training. The focus will be on females planning to stand in the election for the first time. She said the SCW would also train those who were part of women candidates election campaigns.
