Swedish WILPF Press Release - UN Universal Periodic Review of Sweden

Today, May 7, 2010, the Government of Sweden is examined for the first time on how Sweden lives up to its human rights commitments in the UN Human Rights Council. Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom is pushing for the inclusion of Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security to be included in the review.

The Swedish section of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom is one of many organizations behind the NGO report that is to function as a counterweight to the Swedish official report. WILPF has also contributed input to the stakeholder report which is compiled by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. WILPF's International Secretariat in Geneva regularly monitors the work of the Council.

"It is extremely important that civil society organizations in countries such as Sweden are a driving force in these human rights processes. They can set a good example of how  to impact their countries' work on human rights through the UN. In other countries this work can be associated with great danger", says Madeleine Rees International Secretary General of WILPF and former head of women's rights and gender unit of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

WILPF is actively working for the Human Rights Council to also consider how states are implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 Women, Peace and Security because of its direct link to the human rights of women in conflict areas. The resolution marked the first time in which the Security Council addressed the disproportionate affect violent conflict has on women, as well as the undervalued contribution of women in conflict prevention, peace processes, mediation and conflict resolution. The Security Council resolution demands the equal participation of women in all levels in peace and security politics.

It is the states that questions and examines Sweden in today’s UPR. WILPF has therefore prior to the UPR review, sent questions and recommendations to the missions in Geneva represented in the council for them to use in the hearing of Sweden.

Sweden promotes itself as a great advocate for 1325 and we hope to encourage other states to further this work by asking Sweden how it intends to continue its good work and to review its national implementation.

Currently there is no monitoring mechanism for implementation of Resolution 1325.
