NASA has helped to set a new record for the most women in
space this week as it sent three female astronauts aboard the Discovery shuttle
to join a fourth woman at the International Space Station.
The number of men in space will outnumber women on
the mission, but the record comes 47 years after the first woman astronaut,
Valentina Tereshkova, made the journey.
Stephanie Wilson told the Times: "I'd love to
have those numbers be higher, but I think that we have made a great start and
have paved the way, with women now being able to perform the same duties as men
in space flight."
Of the women in space, one is a former
schoolteacher, one is a chemist and two are aerospace engineers.
Discovery was the last shuttle to be launched at
night when it lifted off on Monday and there will be just three more missions
as President Obama plans to halt further space projects.
