Water Kills More People Than War - UN Secretary-General
22 March 2010 –More people die from unsafe water than from all forms
of violence, including war, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today,
calling for better protection and sustainable management of one of the
Earth’s most precious resources on the occasion of World Water Day.

Overview
of the mandate
In September 2007, the High Commissioner for Human Rights
presented a study to the Human Rights Council on the scope and content of
the relevant human rights obligations related to equitable access to safe
drinking water and sanitation under international human rights instruments. For

Commissioner expressed her belief “that it is now time to consider access to
safe drinking water and sanitation as a human right, defined as the right to
equal and non-discriminatory access to a sufficient amount of safe drinking
water for personal and domestic uses - drinking, personal sanitation, washing
of clothes, food preparation and personal and household hygiene - to sustain
life and health”. She also lays out several issues
requiring further study, and the Independent Expert has taken these as the
starting point for her mandate. These issues include: Issues The
