Shetizenjournalist.com - By Women, For Women, Of Women

When “She” replaces the ‘C’ of Citizen Journalism it becomes Shetizen Journalism – a platform that aims to break down gender stereotypes, promote women’s empowerment and encourage women to speak in their own voice.

With women submitting news reports about issues that affect them, http://www.shetizenjournalist.com/ aims to fix the spotlight firmly on women’s rights, gender debates and news and current affairs from a woman’s perspective.

Shetizenjournalist.com is a tool for today’s women who can use the platform to report, raise gender debates and discussions on issues that matter to women and that contributes to their empowerment. Women power at its strongest through news and opinion - ‘Shetizen journalist’. It is a citizen journalism website but with a key difference; it is for women, by women and of women.

Nilanjana Bhowmick, founder and editor, says, “I have worked with several international and Indian media houses and in my experience reports on women’s issues are relegated to inside pages and non-prime time news. The normal reaction from editors is that ‘What’s new about it?’ Also, women journalists are more encouraged to report on celebrity news, gossips, parties, lifestyle and soft features. We want to provide a platform where women journalists from across the world can report on issues that they deem important.”

Shetizenjournalist.com is thus not only a tool for the common woman but also a tool for women journalists to report on issues that they believe in – breaking the gender stereotype that exists in mainstream media all over the world.

“Shetizenjournalist.com desires to become an option for women journalists to talk about more serious issues which impact women’s lives, their status and position in society, their health problems, professional needs et al. This is also a platform for women from other walks of life to report and vent their opinions on issues that impact their lives. If diffusion of information and exchange of opinion are going to make fundamental impact in women’s quest for a better and more equitable world, http://www.shetizenjournalist.com/ wants to act as a key vehicle of that change,” adds Bhowmick.

Shetizenjournalist.com also provides two options – one that of uploading a first person account called “My Story” and a quick report (QR). My Story is for women who want to talk about their own experiences in the first person. QRs are for women who do not have much time, or who would prefer to quickly express their points of view or for women on the move. At Shetizen we believe in providing a voice to women from every walk of life and we want women to reach out to others with their stories no matter what their circumstances are. So, do not think you need to upload wordy write ups – you can just as well keep on uploading short pieces – just so long as you share with our community what you think is important.
