SERBIA: ASTRA TRAFFICKING CAMPAIGN - NAKED FACTS

Women are not meat. Children are not slaves. People are not a commodity.

Serbia - ASTRA - Over half a million of people, mainly women and children, fall victim to trafficking every year. This problem particularly hits the Balkans, owing to the militarization of the region, its geographical position and difficult economic situation. Today, Republic of Serbia is a country of destination, transit and origin of trafficked victims.

Women’s groups in Serbia started dealing with the problem of trafficking in human beings during the 1990s. ASTRA was the first NGO to focus exclusively on trafficking as one of the gravest forms of violence against women. Our work on prevention, education and assistance to the victims of trafficking is aimed at making this problem visible in the society and at popular awareness raising, in order to ensure consideration of this problem free of prejudices, especially in relation to women - victims of trafficking, who often suffer grave mental and physical violence.

Serbia is the country of origin, transit and destination, i.e. exploitation of trafficking victims, very often all at the same time. Namely, internal trafficking has been on the rise, the kind of trafficking in which victims are sold from one town to another, without crossing the state border. Sexual exploitation is still a dominating form of exploitation in Serbia, but we must not neglect child trafficking for forced begging and trafficking in men for labor exploitation.

NAKED FACTS, on ASTRA’s and their own behalf, are presented by Jugoslav Ćosić, Milutin Petrović, Ivan Tasovac, Dejan Anastasijević, Željko Bodrožić, Branislav Lečić and Vukašin Marković.  They have been chosen as men who possess strong professional and personal integrity and who are known for insisting on the truth.
