GENDER & POLITICAL RELIGIONS

Totalitarian Movements and Political Religions (TMPR) is a Routledge-published quarterly journal, which provides a forum for the exploration of the politics of illiberal ideologies, whether religious or secular.

In 2010, TMPR intends to publish a double-issue dedicated to the study of gender and political religions. Empirical work as well as theoretical or conceptual pieces will be included.

Deadline for Abstracts: January 15, 2010.

The journal entails critical analysis of theory and international case studies pertaining to:

  • The historic and ongoing interaction between religion and politics.
  • The impact of religious radicalism on public policy, political attitudes and decision-making.
  • Secular but 'totalising' movements, such as fascism, Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, and Ba'athism.
  • Conflicts between illiberal ideologies (both religious and secular) and their opponents.
  • Publicly enforced (ir)religion and dissent.
  • The contemporary politics of religious revivalism, in Europe, North America, and the Muslim World.

TMPR has particular interest in the following fields:

  • Feminist approaches to the study of political religion
  • Women as actors in religio-political movements, militant or otherwise
  • The social construction of the female/the feminine in religio-political ideologies
  • The question of women's voices within systems of political religions.
  • Notions of masculinity in political religions.
  • Women as radical actors vs. women as dissenting voices.

Case-studies pertaining to any ideology, any faith tradition and from across the world (whether the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas) are welcomed.

All papers will be double blind peer-reviewed prior to publication. It is anticipated that the special issue will subsequently be re-published as a book by Routledge (subject to the approval of all contents by the publisher).
