Nepal - Woman Social Justice Journalist  Critically Injured by Attackers

Radio journalist and news correspondent for the Rajdhani National Daily in Kathmandu, Ms. Tika Bista, was critically injured after a brutal assault Tuesday, December 8. The attack occured in the mountainous town of Musikot, a town in the Baitadi District in the Mahakali Zone of western Nepal.

Bista was found unconscious with severe head injuries and cut wounds to the body. Many wounds appeared to be made by a razor blade. Unconscious, she was recovered at the base of a high cliff and brought to a small district hospital closeby. Shortly after this, in a critical state, she was airlifted to the Nepalgunj Medical College hospital in Kathmandu.

In a cellphone conversation minutes before the attack, Bista told Nepali media collegue, Dhanbir Dhal, that she was afraid and that three men were following her. After this her cellphone went silent.

Seven hours following the attack Bista regained conciousness at the hospital, but due to injuries, was unable to talk to police about the incident. Police did find Bista’s laptop, cellphone and personal radio. These belongings were discovered in a demolished state.

Tika Bista had recently written an article covering the plight of a rural Nepali family. The topic covered difficulties the family had faced, and continued to face, due to war conflict in the area.
