CHANUKAH - FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS JEWISH
HOLIDAY - WOMEN & GIRLS
Grandmother & Granddaughter Lighting Chanukah Menorah Candles
"We’ve come to chase away the darkness, carrying light and fire in our hands…" goes the modern Israeli song. Chanukah is a time to celebrate the tiny miracle of oil and light, and the spirit of the Jewish people fighting to preserve our identity throughout the course of history.
The
festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum,
the nine-branched Menorah one additional light on each night
of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. An extra light called
a shamash (Hebrew:
"guard" or "servant") is also lit each night for the
purpose of lighting the others, and is given a distinct location, usually above
or below the rest.
In
addition to lighting Chanukah candles, the rituals of this holiday can be
enriched by innovative Chanukah practices that celebrate women’s connections to
the Chanukah story, that focus on healing, and that offer an inspired role for
gift giving.
