European Parliament Committees Call for Strategies to Combat VAW

On 10 November 2009 the European Parliament’s Committee for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality adopted a resolution for the elimination of violence against women. The resolution advocates for the European Union Council and Commission to create a legal framework and basis for eliminating violence against women. (More information)

Trafficking Victims Speak at UN Panel Discussion

As part of its victim-centered approach to trafficking, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights invited several trafficking victims to speak at a panel discussion attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 22 October 2009. (More information)

Country Evaluations 15 Years after the Beijing Platform for Action

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe released national reports designed to evaluate and appraise the success and status of the Beijing Platform for Action.  (More information)

Europe: OSCE Convenes Meeting on Gender Equality and Combating Violence Against Women

More than 200 government and civil society representatives from the OSCE's 56 participating States were invited to a meeting to discuss strategies to improve the response to violence against women, including efforts to protect victims, prosecute perpetrators and prevent such violence.  (More information)

Central America: UNDP Report Assesses Gender-Based Violence in Region

The United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean recently released “Opening Spaces for Citizen Security and Human Development”, the 2009-2010 Central American Human Development Report. The report’s conclusions were based on security assessments from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. (More information)

Report Analyzes Violence in 10 European Union Countries

A new document, “Violence in the EU Examined: Policies on Violence against Women, Children and Youth in 2004 EU Accession Countries,” assesses violence in the ten countries that joined the European Union in 2004. (More information)

Report Outlines Gaps in ASEAN Laws Regarding Child-Sex Tourism

A new report highlights the achievements and failures in the laws of member states of the Association of South East Asian Nations regarding child-sex tourism.  (More information)

Report Links Wife Inheritance to Gender-Based Violence

“Wife Inheritance: A Death Sentence Behind the Mask of Culture,” a new report produced by the Centre for Rights, Education, and Awareness, based in Nairobi, Kenya, outlines the practice of wife inheritance particularly in relationship to the spread of HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. New Report Outlines Risks for Women Migrant Workers and Potential Solutions

A new report released by the International Organization for Migration outlines the specific challenges faced by women migrant workers, who routinely and disproportionately face human rights abuses, including harassment, sexual assault, exploitation, and discrimination, both during the migration process and while working in the destination location. Europe: New Report Describes Domestic Violence Services

Women Against Violence in Europe, a network of non-governmental organizations working against violence against women and children in Europe, has released a new report outlining the social services available to survivors of domestic violence in Europe.  (More information)

WHO Report Offers Intervention Strategies for Combating Gender-Based Violence

The World Health Organization published “Promoting Gender Equality to Prevent Violence Against Women” as part of” Violence Prevention: The Evidence,” a series of briefings discussing effective intervention mechanisms for reducing interpersonal and self-directed acts of violence. About STOPVAW

 

The Stop Violence Against Women website (STOPVAW) is a forum for information, advocacy and change.  The Advocates for Human Rights developed this website as a tool for the promotion of women's human rights in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (FSU), Mongolia, and the U.N. Protectorate of Kosovo.  STOPVAW was developed with support from and in consultation with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Open Society Institute's Network Women's Program. This site addresses violence against women as one of the most pervasive human rights abuses worldwide. STOPVAW provides women's rights advocates with information and advocacy tools focused on ending the most endemic forms of violence against women in the region, including domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment and trafficking in persons.

 

Current staff members of The Advocates for Human Rights involved with the development of STOPVAW include, Mary Ellingen, Mary Ellison, Mary Hunt, Beatriz Menanteau, Rosalyn Park, Robin Phillips, and Cheryl Thomas. Current interns and volunteers include Katie Devlaminck, Nicole Kligerman, and Christina Quick.
