Lebanon - 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2009

“Advocating for the endorsement of the

Draft Law for protecting women from family violence”

This year, KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation decided to dedicate the 16 days of activism against gender violence to enhance the campaign already launched for endorsing a law to protect women and girls from family violence

December 2 – Parliamentarian Workshop: For the first time, the Lebanese parliament decided to commemorate the 25th of November as the international Day to Fight Violence Against Women.  The inaugural event will include this year a round table to discuss and advance the legislation prepared by KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation to protect women from family violence.

December 3 – Photography exhibition “Behind the doors” which is a series of 10 stories by women victims of domestic violence, told in photographs.

December 6 - Beirut International Marathon: Participate with water stands.

December 11 to 13 - Pit Stops in different Lebanese areas will be distributing flyers, advocating for the law and calling for massive contribution in the official closure ceremony.

December 16 – Official closure Event: On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the CEDAW, a closure ceremony “Unite to End Violence against Women” will be organized at the UNESCO Palace in Beirut. The event will be attended by representatives of: the President of the Republic, the Chief of the Parliament and the Prime Minister. The gathering will constitute a platform to further push for the legislation of protection of women from domestic violence and a podium for survivors to give their life testimonies with family  violence.

Through out the 16 days campaign: National Media Campaign

- 340 billboards will be sending the message: “after 30 years of the CEDAW treaty: No more justifications…. It is time to endorse a law to protect women from family violence”.

 - 50,000 sms messages will be sent with the same slogan of the billboards.

- TV spots showing 6 famous figures will be broadcasted on TV stations calling for the endorsement of the law

6 interactive forum theater shows will be playing in different Lebanese villages and cities. The show tackles the issue of violence against women, and dismisses the message on the need to endorse a law protecting women from family violence.
