Lebanon: “Protecting Children from Violence: Their Right - Our Duty”

November 19, 2007 - World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse

On the occasion of the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse 2009, the Higher Council for Childhood-the Ministry of Social Affairs, in partnership with KAFA (enough) Violence &Exploitation, UNICEF, World Vision, Save the Children Sweden, War Child Holland, AFEL, Nabaa Association, Amel Organization, Sustainable Democratic Center, SASCD, Lebanese Union of Child Care, Dar El Amal, launched a nation-wide campaign designed to increase awareness on child abuse and on the preventive measures needed to impede exploitation. The campaign draws inspiration from articles 18 and 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child which recognizes the role of parents in protecting children and the state’s responsibility to take preventive measures against child abuse.

The campaign’s activities adopted a multifaceted approach to the issue starting with a national press conference held at the Safir Heliopolitan Hotel under the patronage of the Minister of Social Affairs, H.E Dr. Salim Sayegh, who stressed on the parents’ role in preventing child abuse. The conference was attended by around 200 people, and was followed by an exposition gathering NGOs working on child abuse in Lebanon. With the lack of a proper platform for organizations active against child abuse, the event provided an opportunity for networking and information and tools sharing among all participating partners.

Between November 17 and November 22, children participate in the campaign through local “Peace Pit-Stops” spread on the roads and highways all over Lebanon. Thousands of flyers, stickers are distributed in addition to informational brochures about child abuse and the positive alternative punishment and preventive measures needed. The material widely circulate in the country highlighted the right of children to protection, educational instructions for parents, as well as a list of the participating NGOs addressing the issue and providing further details.

Furthermore, the Ministry Development Community Centers all over the country are organizing events and awareness with parents and care givers focusing on the role of adults and the crucial need to adopt preventive measures against child abuse.
