Gender Policy for Community Radio

Women Making Airwaves for Peace was the title of a recent cross cultural seminar on women's participation in peace building and disaster management through community radio hosted by Isis Manila International.

Thirty women community radio broadcasters from ten countries from mainly Southeast Asia and the Pacific including femlinkpacific's northern correspondent Adi Vasi Chute gathered in Manila Philippines to participate in the 5-day Women Making Airwaves for Peace (WMAP) seminar from October 16 to 20, 2009.

Women Making Airwaves for Peace was composed of experience sharing, skills sharing and radio productions. The participants are resource persons, trainers, trainees and radio journalists at the same time.

The themes shared included:
• Community Radio and Disaster Management
• Engendered Peace Journalism• Feminist Broadcasting
• Gender Equality Policy for Community Radio• Ditigal Editing
• Interview techniques
• Radio Feature Production
• Studio Operation

"This training went deeper because we analyzed the skills we already have and the problems we encounter in our daily radio work and searched for means to improve ourselves, learning from each other." explained Adivasulevu Chute

Among the topics presented by the participants of WMA were:
• Voice of Women" in Rama Radio in Kalimantan, Indonesia
• Community Radio in Aceh, Indonesia: Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
• The Role of Community Radio in Reconciliation in East Timor
• Jagna Challenges of Managing a Community Radio: Jagna Experience, Philippines

"For me the highlight of this seminar was learning form the experiences of the community radios in Aceh Indonesia after the tsunami. An experience that could have helped us a lot in Manila during the Ketsana floods." said Madella T. Santiago from the Philippines.

The seminar was organised by Isis International in collaboration with AMARC-WIN Asia Pacific.The radio programmes produced during the training, featuring the experiences of women broadcasters from Cambodia, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Sudan and Timor Leste.
