Subject: Update on UN Resolution to Establish a Gender Entity
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to report that the Group of 77 (and China) have finally agreed to
a text for the resolution on UN System Wide Coherence, including strengthening
the UN gender architecture. The Permanent Representative of Egypt delivered
this afternoon the text on behalf of the Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) to
the Co-chairs of the General Assembly debate on System Wide Coherence (SWC).
This removes what seems to be the final hurdle to the resolution to establish a
new gender entity. The version proposed by the JCC trims down the earlier text
distributed by the co-chairs last Tuesday to call for the establishment of a
gender composite entity merging UNIFEM, OSAGI, DAW and INSTRAW and the
appointment of an Under-Secretary-General.
After consideration of the JCC’s input, the Co-Chairs are expected this evening
to distribute to delegates of member states through the President of the
General Assembly a text for the resolution that will be considered by the GA
for approval by consensus on 14th Sept.
I expect that there will be a transitional period between the issuance of the
resolution and the merger of the aforementioned gender specific entities into
one.
