WHAT
IS CEDAW?
Adopted
by the UN General Assembly in 1979, CEDAW is the international bill of rights
for women. It legally obligates Governments that have signed onto the
Convention to promote and protect the rights of women in all spheres of their
lives. It defines what equality and life without discrimination mean for
women and girls around the world. It empowers women and promotes women’s
active participation, which are crucial to creating social change and
fighting global poverty. 186 countries – more than ninety per cent of the
members of the United Nations – have signed onto the Convention. This is a
powerful expression of commitment to achieving gender equality.
