Making Pregnancy Safer

Introduction

MPS banner

Every day 1500 women die due to complications in pregnancy or childbirth. 10 000 babies per day die within the first month of life and an equal number of babies are born dead. Skilled care around the time of birth would greatly reduce the number of these needless deaths.

The WHO Department of Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) helps to improve maternal health, assists countries to ensure skilled care before, during and after pregnancy and childbirth and strengthen national health systems in order to achieve Millennium Development Goals 4, 5 and 6. The main goal is to reduce newborn mortality and maternal mortality significantly by 2015.

MAKING PREGNANCY SAFER - COUNTRY PROFILES

To assist countries in planning and decision making, MPS analyzed data collected in many countries on a regular basis through the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) or other national surveys in developing country profiles showing in a visual format important key health service coverage for maternal and newborn health in the different regions of 78 countries. The profiles demonstrate great differences within-country in the coverage in MNH interventions between urban rural, the poorest and wealthiest population group. The MPS country profiles are being used for advocacy and programme planning purposes both internationally and in country. For example, the profiles have been widely used as an advocacy tool for global maternal mortality campaign. In country, the profile was used by WHO office to develop the national progress report on maternal health which was adopted by the government.
