What We Do

PeaceWomen Across the Globe is working to make women’s roles as peacebuilders more visible, recognized and better supported globally.  We are connecting individual peacewomen and organizations at national, regional and international levels. Our goal is to connect and strengthen women's peace efforts around the globe so that a strong, cross-sectoral and global women's peace movement will emerge.

This work is important because despite important international instruments to protect women's rights, notably the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and UN Security Council Resolution 1325, women continue to be marginalised and excluded from and through decision making, and especially where there is violence and poverty.  Women peacebuilders must have greater influence in peace negotiations, policy development, peacekeeping operations and formal decision making, not just because it is their civil and political right, but because their rich experience and holistic approach to peace is invaluable to securing a future that is sustainable and just for us all.

An important part of what we do is challenge narrow definitions of peace.  Peace is not simply the absence of war.  Peace is based on justice and the attainment of human security. Redefining peace to understand it in its fullest sense also leads to a new understanding of what peacebuilding means.

Peacebuilding is often thought of as something heroic or spectacular, or as something carried out by Heads of State.  In reality, peacebuilding is rarely spectacular, although it does require courage and endurance. Effective peacebuilding is the long-term pursuit of justice and human security. This is the criteria we use to identify women who are peacebuilders:

Our Objectives

Objective One: To increase visibility and support for women peacebuilders.

Objective Two: To facilitate connections between peacewomen, channel solidarity and help expand knowledge and skills.

Objective Three: To popularise the PeaceWoman concept of peace and peacebuilding.
