GEAR - UN Gender Equality
Architecture Reform
In early June 2009, the UN held an Interactive Meeting on
Institutional Arrangements in Support of Gender Equality and Empowerment of
Women to move the GEAR process forward. The Co-chairs stressed the
importance of constructive suggestions from governments to undertake some of
the more complicated questions. During the meeting, Rachel Mayanja, The
UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of
Women, presented a paper in response to Member States request for more detail
regarding the staffing and funding of the new entity. Her Power Point
report highlighted key functions, the overall structure, governance structure,
staffing and related cost of the new GEAR entity
