OBJECT challenges ‘sex
object culture’ – the increased sexual objectification of women in the
media and popular culture through lads' mags, advertising or lap dancing
clubs.
Sex object culture has
been driven by the mainstreaming of the porn and sex industries and has
been highlighted as a 'conducive context' for violence
against women (End Violence Against Women Coalition, 2008).
We raise awareness of the
links between sex object culture and sexism because of the need to tackle
the attitudes underpinning inequality and violence against women. We
campaign, lobby and provide a resource of information.
Challenging
the normalisation of lap dancing
A legal loophole means that lap dancing clubs in England and Wales are licensed as cafes. OBJECT is stripping
the illusion that buying a lap dance is no different from buying a latte.
As a first step, we have been campaigning with Fawcett
Society for lap dancing clubs to be licensed in the same way as peep
shows and sex shops.
The Government has now
proposed to tighten up licensing of the industry. This will finally
allow sexism to be raised as an issue in licensing.
However, the reforms do not go far enough and must be improved. Take action today!
