Global Forum on Migration and Development
Civil Society Days
Athens, Greece – November 2-3, 2009
The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) takes place
every year. The first GFMD was held in July 2007 in Brussels and the second in
October 2008 in Manila.
The 3rd GFMD will be held November 2-5, 2009 in
Athens, Greece.
The Alexander S. Onassis Foundation will organize the Civil
Society Days (CSD) November 2-3, 2009 in tandem with the GFMD Athens 2009
Government Meeting. These two events take place successively, the first on the
level of representatives of the Civil Society and the second with the participation
of representatives from U.N. member states.
The Civil Society Days will gather a broad range of
non-governmental actors to discuss the migration and development nexus, which
in turn will provide input to the governmental discussions.
The conference languages will be: English, French, Spanish and
Greek.
This application form is available in English, Spanish and French,
and should be filled out in one of these languages.

I.
INTRODUCTION
The aim of the Civil Society Days is to
bring interested, non-governmental parties together to exchange ideas and
experiences, and to prepare a set of conclusions and recommendations which will
be presented to the GFMD Athens 2009 Government Meeting.
Timetable:

AGENDA, FORMAT, THEMES
The roundtable themes discussed during the
Civil Society Days will parallel those of the GFMD Athens 2009 Government
Meeting:

reintegration and circulation for development

Policy and Institutional
Coherence and Partnerships
More information on these themes and on
the agenda of the GFMD Civil Society Days will gradually be made available on
this website. The final agenda will be posted in October 2009.
The Civil Society Days will be organized
in a way that will allow for genuine discussion among civil society actors, and
for participants to work towards concrete outputs. There will be a combination of
smaller group discussions and plenary sessions. A Civil Society delegation will
present the CSD recommendations to the GFMD Government Meeting.
III.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Participation
in the GFMD Civil Society Days: Due to space limitations, the
number of participants in the GFMD Civil Society Days will be limited to 200
official (international) delegates, and will be by invitation only. The
selection process will be conducted by the International Advisory Committee. Furthermore,
30 official delegates based in Greece will be selected by the Greek Selection
Committee.
Participation
in the Online Dialogue: The Online
Dialogue and the Sharing Experiences sections
of the CSD 2009 website (www.gfmd2009.org) provide an opportunity to
the wider public, interested and active citizens and NGOs, to exchange ideas
and experiences with other people in the field of migration and development.
They also offer a platform for Civil Society actors and NGOs to present best
practices in the field of migration and development and innovative initiatives
that they have undertaken in these fields.
Material that will be collected through the Online Dialogue exchange will
feed into the preparation of the CSD 2009.
Organizations/
Institutions/individuals should:
Note: participating
organizations/institutions should be of a public interest nature and have past
national or/and regional/international exposure/activity. Each
organization/institution will be represented by one individual, preferably by
its president. If he/she is not available, he/she nominates the person to
represent him/her.
Selection procedure is confidential and it
is not possible to appeal against the results.

Persons interested in participating need to fill out this
Application Form and submit to info@gfmd2009.org. Deadline for applications is on June 1st,
2009. Applications by fax or post will not be accepted. Applicants will
be advised from July 10, 2009 onwards whether they
have been selected to participate in the conference.
Participation Costs: |
All participants who apply for funding for their travel and
accommodation expenses will be funded. The support will cover air travel on an
economy class, airport transfers to and from the hotel in Athens and hotel
accommodation for three nights (1st, 2nd and 3rd
of November, 2009), including breakfast. The organizer will also take care of
meals for these 3 days. All hotel rooms will be on a single room basis.
