UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON HUMAN
RIGHTS
OF MIGRANTS - MISSION
TO MEXICO
Gender Excerpt: D. MIGRANT WOMEN
49. Migrant women are particularly
vulnerable in Mexico. They form the majority of cases of harassment or abuse in
detention, clandestine domestic workers (sometimes "servants"),
prostitutes, sexual abuse and physical and sexual assault in smuggling operations.
They are also the majority of victims of trafficking (the total estimated at
16,000 to 22,000 victims annually, including children) and there are unusually
high rates of homicides of women, especially in such border towns as Ciudad
Juarez. Those women migrants who enter Mexico regularly or find decent work are
often subject to a wage differential based on their sex, reported to be as much
as 40% lower than men of the same skill level.
