In August 1945, Hiroshima was the target of the world's first atomic bomb. An estimated 140,000 people were instantly killed and the death toll continued to rise with hundreds of thousands injured and diseased as a result of the bombing.

The YWCA of Japan has organised a ‘Pilgrimage to Hiroshima’ to commemorate the bombing and is calling for young women and women of the YWCA movement to participate in the event.

The ‘Pilgrimage to Hiroshima’ will run from August 14-16, 2009 and the programme includes visits to

·                         Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima

·                         Hiroshima Jogakuin High School that lost over 300 students and teachers

·                         Mt. Hijiyama, city evacuated after the atomic bomb was dropped

There will also be workshops organised that look at issues surrounding nuclear weapons and the devastating impact they have had on Japan.

Application forms and registration fees for the ‘Pilgrimage to Hiroshima’ are available by request to the following email: office-japan@ywca.or.jp

The application deadline for the event is June 30, 2009.
