“Rape in the European Union: Different Systems, Similar Outcomes?”

On the 28th of April, EPAC VAW, the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) and the Child and Women Abuse Studies Unit (CWASU) held a briefing meeting during which Liz Kelly, professor at the London Metropolitan University, presented an in-depth transnational report on rape in Europe.

The study is the following of a first publication “Rape: the forgotten issue” (2003) already highlighting the limited attention given to rape in national and European programme on VAW, the failure of criminal justice systems to prosecute rape effectively and the absence of information exchange across Europe in Rape.

This new study gave in-depth information and understanding of rape reporting, prosecution and conviction in 11 countries: Austria, Belgium, England and Wales, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden. It also drew attention to common challenges the European Union faces.
