European Commission, Brussels, 3 March
2009
In the present economic environment
encouraging women to choose a scientific career will not only benefit them but
also the economy in general and act as a multiplying growth factor. There
is a big pool of unused potential out there!
On 3 March, the European Commission has
received a signed Code for Best
Practices for Women in ICT by some of the major actors in the ICT sector.
The Code provides for practices which aim not only to attract women in ICT but
also to keep them in the sector and help them reach their full potential.
Shadowing
Every year, the Commission launches a
shadowing exercise, working together with some leading companies active in
Europe to give young women a taste of what a job in ICT would be like. The idea
has been to show them what a typical day would be like, by accompanying or "shadowing"
a female role model for a day. A number of leading technology companies have
taken part in this exercise together with the European Commission.

Code for Best Practices for Women in ICT (pdf)
Attracting more women into ICT jobs will not
just help to address a problem that risks damaging the whole economy, but also
contributes to realising equal opportunities goals and empowers women by
enhancing their capacity to participate fully in the information society and
shape its development. Stakeholders in the Information Technology and
Telecommunications sectors are developing national and corporate initiatives to
ensure greater participation of women in all areas of the sector.
