Under
the Tacaná follows the lives of several migrant women as they are arrested in
control posts and hostels across Mexico’s southern border, in the Soconusco
region, run the risk of being deported at a migrant station in Tapachula, and
visit places where they are forced or lured into prostitution by the Mexican
authorities. Bajo el Tacaná uses the migrant’s testimonies and first-hand
accounts from bystanders, such as a taxi driver in Tapachula and a woman
doctor who attends the prostitutes, to chronicle the atrocities that take
place in the Mexico- Guatemala border. |

Dear Colleague,
I am pleased to announce that United Nations
International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women
(UN-INSTRAW) is launching a new Gender and Migration Virtual Community.
The community seeks to create a space for those who share
an interest in gender and migration to debate and reflect on issues in the
field, share information and learn from each other. The Community
acts both as a network for dialogue between civil society groups,
international organizations, governments, and researchers and as an information
hub, by creating a space for its members to share publications, resources,
contacts, and information about upcoming training and funding opportunities.
Despite women's growing role as independent migrants,
their increasing participation in the sending, receiving and managing of
remittances, and the evidence pointing to the necessity of including a
gender perspective in development programs, very few studies have looked at
gender, migration, remittances and development. How do global care chains work?
How will the financial crisis affect migration and remittance flows? What are
the best practices for migrant associations? Over the next few months the
community will be considering these issues and more. Members of the community
will also have the opportunity to start discussions of their own, ask for
information, and share articles, documents, publications, news items and
events.

anunciarles el lanzamiento de la Comunidad Virtual en Género y Migración
creada por el Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones y Capacitación de las
Naciones Unidas para la Promoción de la Mujer (UN-INSTRAW).
La
comunidad busca crear un espacio para aquellas personas interesadas en
los debates y reflexiones actuales relacionadas con género y migración, así
como ser un canal de intercambio de información y de aprendizaje continuo. La
comunidad será una red para el dialogo entre los grupos de la sociedad civil,
las organizaciones internacionales, los entes gubernamentales y los
investigadores. A su vez será un centro de información que servirá para que
cada miembro pueda compartir sus publicaciones, contactos, información y demás
recursos, así como oportunidades de financiación y capacitación.
A pesar de
la importancia de las mujeres como migrantes autónomas, y su creciente
participación en el envío, recepción y administración de las remesas; sumada a
la evidente necesidad de incluir la perspectiva de género en los programas de
desarrollo, son pocos los estudios que miran a la relación entre género,
migración, remesas y desarrollo. Cómo funcionan las cadenas globales del
cuidado? De qué forma la actual crisis financiera va a afectar los flujos de
migración y de remesas? Cuales son las mejores prácticas implementadas
por las asociaciones de migrantes y grupos de base? Estas y otras inquietudes
serán tratadas por la comunidad. Sus miembros también tendrán la oportunidad de
iniciar foros de acuerdo a su interés, así como solicitar información,
compartir artículos, documentos, publicaciones, noticias y difundir eventos.

C'est avec grand plaisir que je vous annonce le lancement de la nouvelle Communauté Virtuelle
"Genre et Migration" depuis l'Institut International de
Recherche et de Formation des Nations Unis de l'Avancement des Femmes.
La communauté a pour but d'offrir aux personnes intéresées par le genre et la
migration un espace pour débattre et réfléchir sur le thème, pour échanger des
informations et expériences respectives. La communauté est un espace de
rencontre pour les membres de la société civile, de la recherche, et les
organizations internationales. C'est aussi un centre d'information et de
partage de publications, resources, contacts, et opportunités de formations et
de financements.
Malgré
l'augmentation du nombre de femmes qui migrent indépendemment, malgré le role
croissant des femmes dans l'envoi, la réception et la gestion des transferts
d'argent, et enfin malgré le fait qu'il soit prouvé que la perspective de genre
doit être inclue dans les programmes de développement, très peu d'études se
sont intéressées au thème de la migration, des transferts et du développment,
dans une perspective de genre. Comment fonctionnent les Chaines Globales de
Soins? Comment la crise financière affectera-t-elle la migration et les flux
migratoires? Quelles bonnes pratiques d'associations de migrants peut-on imiter?
La Communauté Virtuelle abordera ces thèmes, tout en laissant cours aux apports
de ses membres sous forme de demande d'information, de partage d'articles, de
documents, publications, nouvelles et évènements.
