PROGRAMME II
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM:
"Towards an improved enforcement of FGM-legislation in Europe:
Dissemination of lessons learned and capacity building of actors in the legal
and paralegal field"
Ghent,Monasterium PoortAckere, 18 May 2009
Background
This research project, which is the follow-up of a
previous project on legislation regarding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in
Europe, has reached its final stage. The International Symposium is organised
to present the results of the research project on improving enforcement of
FGM-legislation in Europe.
Research shows that the implementation of criminal and
child protection laws on FGM is a complex matter. Developing legislation alone
is not sufficient.
This project aimed at tackling the problem by enhancing
the capacities of key professionals to identify and properly deal with FGM in 5
EU countries.[1][1] Through workshops for professionals from various sectors, information
and training was provided. Simultaneously, the workshops gave country-specific feedback
on obstacles for implementing the laws. By disseminating the results at European
level, practical recommendations resulting from these workshops are helpful for
other member states.
In addition, an extensive review of laws on FGM in
countries of the European Union, including the new member states, was
performed.
This project is carried out by the International
