Welcome to the MILEAD Fellows Program
The
MILEAD Fellows Program offers a unique, long-term developmental approach to identifying
young African women with potential and passion for transformational leadership
roles, preparing them through rigorous training, and promoting their
achievements and capabilities.
Each year Moremi Initiative identifies a cadre of extraordinary young African
women and girls, between the ages of 9 and 25.
Candidates are drawn from every region in Africa and the Diaspora.
Selected fellows are linked with experienced women leaders who are committed to
supporting and nurturing the next generation of African women leaders.
Fellows belong to three program categories – MILEAD Senior Fellows (Between 19
and 25 years), Annual Girls Congress (Between 13 and 19 years) and School-based
Girls Congress (Between 9 and 13 years)
About MILEAD Senior Fellows Program
Each
year, the program selects 25 young women leaders between the ages of 19 and 25
to take part in a yearlong formal training and mentoring (combined with long
term support) program, designed to build skills, strengthen networks, and
provide help and assistance for women in reaching their goals. Potential
fellows are identified and recruited throughout Africa as well as refugees and
immigrants who have settled in the Diaspora. Over the course of a year,
young women selected as fellows progress through three phases that include 1)
identification and preparation of fellows through the leadership development,
networking, conferences, mentoring, and training, 2) promotion of fellows
through media coverage and networking, and 3) support of fellows through career
planning, management and access to resources.
Moremi Initiative is now accepting applications for 2009/2010 Senior Fellows Program who will participate in this year’s summer Institute. Click here to apply online or Click here to download application package.
Applicants
selected as fellows begin by attending the 2009 Summer Institute where they
take classes and work on a development plan that identifies long-term career
interests and community-based projects addressing critical issues. After
the Summer Institute, fellows’ transition into mentoring, internship, and
workplace exchange opportunities that help them build their skills, gain
professional experience, and cultivate connections. For example, we are
developing a database of experts consisting of women in leadership positions
who agree to mentor fellows. We are also cultivating partnerships with
business and political organizations around the world where fellows can
complete an internship or workplace exchange. Throughout the year, main themes
are emphasized that include social responsibility, commitment, values and
environmental sensitivity, constituency-building, and private/public
linkages. By the end of each year, fellows’ transition out of mentoring
or internship activities and are engaged in a career move or educational
advancement.
Summer Institute
Moremi
Initiative is excited to host the maiden edition of the MILEAD Fellows Program
Summer Institute from July 26 to August 14, 2009, at the University of Ghana,
Legon in Accra Ghana. The Summer Institute is a three-week intensive
residential training program for outstanding young African women leaders
selected as Fellows.
This year’s institute will enable twenty-five young women fellows to cross-examine concepts of leadership in a broad African context, cultivate the skills and experiences women need to occupy and excel in leadership positions, increase visibility of fellows in African society, expand advocacy on women’s issues, and establish a strong international network that promotes African women’s leadership.
Courses employ a combination of lectures, workshops, group discussions, mentoring, practical role-playing, readings, and film among others. The three weeks course will hold approximately forty-five hours of academic lectures and skills training, twenty hours of practical leadership and community work, a field trip selected International and local organizations and participation thematic summits and a seminar.
The program focuses on core topics that include:
1) leadership development,
2) solidarity, networking and collaboration,
3) mentoring,
4) advocacy and research,
5) social activism and transformative service to society.
Additionally, they gain insight on women’s rights, reproductive health,
HIV/AIDS, peace and conflict processes, root and impact of sexual and
gender-based violence, entrepreneurship, politics, environment, and community
development.
Once fellows complete the Summer Institute, they work with WIELD’s Operations Manager to finalize a personalized plan for gaining leadership building experiences or accessing resources needed to achieve their goals.
Who can participate?
Moremi
Initiative will identify and recruit young women between the ages of 9 and 25
to participate in the leadership development program. By convening participants
drawn from each region, Moremi Initiative will enable fellows to cross-examine
various concepts of leadership in a broad African context. Moremi
Initiative will collaborate with national organizations, advisors and
institutions to identify and recruit fellows with potential, experience and
commitment to the development and participation of women in the development of
Africa.
Program Benefits
We
seek to increase the visibility of women and girls in African society, increase
advocacy on women’s issues, and establish a strong international network to
promote African women’s leadership. Specific achievements through the
African Women Fellowship Initiative include: 1) increase access of junior fellows
to quality education, 2) increase level of skill and decision-making by fellows
in their places of work, and 3) encourage a strong commitment of fellows to
gender equality and elimination of gender-based violence.
About Moremi Initiative
Moremi
Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa, a non-profit organization founded
by African women, was established in 2003 to devise strategies that enable
girls and young women to develop transformational leadership skills that
prepare them for leadership positions in their communities. We firmly
believe that the full and active participation of women in leadership is a
pre-requisite for positive change and development in Africa, and addresses
leadership imbalances.
Moremi Initiative strives to engage, inspire and equip young women and girls to become the next generation of leading politicians, activists, social entrepreneurs and change agents: Leaders who can transform and change institutions that legitimize and perpetuate discrimination against women.
