Lebanon +: KAFA Program to End
Domestic Violence by Engaging Men & Boys
BEIRUT- March 19, 2009 – Pledging for a
similar approach to the recently passed Women’s International Day on March 8,
KAFA has partnered with Oxfam Great Britain (OGB) , with the financial support
of UNIFEM- Jordan to not only provide a voice for females against women
domestic violence but also to allow men and boys (M&B) a chance to engage
in that same advocacy.
While
working to End Domestic Violence Against Women (EVAW), KAFA has adopted
preventative and protective strategies for working with men as perpetuators,
community leaders, youth, and decision/policy makers however, this approach has
not yet earned great recognition. For this reason, the project aims to build
capacity, develop skills, and technically assist members and staff of women’s
organizations in the Middle East
to develop well-consolidated approaches in addressing an end for domestic
violence with the help and support of men and boys.
It is profoundly
expected that male involvement within this project will most likely contribute
towards reducing incidents of domestic violence in the upcoming future.
Providing
women organizations in Lebanon,
Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, and Syria,
the knowledge and skills required for working with men towards ending domestic
violence by 2010 is the first objective.
Likewise, KAFA will be
fortunate to continue lobbying for the Domestic Violence protection bill in Lebanon
by the year 2011 with an additional group: men and boys.
Besides campaigning
for a bill to end domestic violence, KAFA and male contributors will take part
in promoting a global link of communication and an exchange of information
between all women organizations working with men and boys in order to
abolish domestic violence by 2011.
The
generated knowledge, learning, and expertise will encourage other organizations
in the region to adopt such work in their countries along with their own
ongoing programs regarding the elimination of domestic violence. This is
expected to increase the number of male participants in favor of ending
domestic violence, unfold the myths that most or all Arab men are violently or
should be violently patriarchal towards women, and most predominantly, reduce
or better yet, seize women domestic violence by men in the Arab region with the
help of men and boys who willingly lack the embarrassment and
religious suppression to do so.
