On this occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), UNESCO launches the annual Women Make the News campaign and online forum.

Under the theme, ‘Gender Equality Policies in Media Organizations’, this year’s campaign aims to emphasize the significance of developing and introducing policies in media organizations to prevent all forms of discrimination based on gender.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), with support from UNESCO and Sweden’s LO-TCO Secretariat of International Trade Union Development Cooperation, has published a handbook entitled Getting the Balance Right. The guide provides possible ways on how to tackle some of the central issues concerning the establishment of women’s equality in the field of media. The handbook for media professionals and institutions can be found on the Women Make the News website.

UNESCO in partnership with the International Federation of Journalists invites women and men working in media organizations, professional associations and journalists’ unions to participate in the Women Make the News online forum. You are invited to share your experiences and best practices in advocating for, developing and implementing policies to ensure equality for women journalists. These policies could refer to specific sub-themes such as equal pay and opportunities for promotion, working in conflict or post-conflict zones, gender stereotyping, monitoring policy implementation, etc. Stories should be submitted by 15 April 2009.

Also available on the website are video clips and downloadable banners, and a logo that can be used to promote Women Make the News in your organizations.

For more information please visit the Women Make the News website at: http://www.unesco.org/webworld/en/march8.

Launched annually on the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), Women Make the News is a global initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in the media.
