Launch of New Website Dedicated to Abandonment of FGM/C

On 6 February 2009, the Donors Working Group (DWG) on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) launched a new website aimed at abolishing the practice. The site provides a forum for sharing research, news, and resources, such as community programming ideas that can be implemented worldwide. (More information)

Human Rights Groups Press Council of Europe to Act on Coercive Sterilization Practices

On 18 February 2009, the European Roma Rights Centre, along with a number of other human rights organizations, sent a letter to the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg. The letter urges the Commissioner to investigate reports of forced sterilization in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia on women who are mainly of Roma origin. (More information)

European Parliament Reports on Female Genital Mutilation in the European Union

A new report adopted by the European Parliament’s Women’s Rights Committee found that over 500,000 women in Europe, especially refugees and immigrants, have been subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM). (More information)

UNFPA Publishes New Report on Gender-Based Violence

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recently released a report entitled “Addressing Gender-based Violence: UNFPA Strategy and Framework for Action”. This report identifies the particular areas where action is most urgently needed and proposes general policy frameworks for combating gender-based violence. (More information)

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Publishes New Report on Human Trafficking

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has just completed a new report on human trafficking. The report begins with a global overview on legislation, the criminal justice response, trafficking patterns, intra-and-international flows, and monitoring. The UNODC also highlights the situation of a variety of countries from all regions of the world. (More information)

United States Trafficking in Persons Report Seeks Your Input

The 2009 United States Trafficking in Persons Report season has begun, and we invite you to contribute to the important work of holding countries accountable for their efforts to combat trafficking.  The State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (G/TIP) relies heavily on NGOs to supplement information received by foreign governments. New research indicates that women assaulted by intimate partners typically experience different types of facial injuries than those who suffer injuries from other causes, such as attacks by unknown assailants. (More information)

About STOPVAW

 

The Stop Violence Against Women website (StopVAW) is a forum for information, advocacy and change.  The Advocates for Human Rights developed this website as a tool for the promotion of women's human rights in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (FSU), Mongolia, and the U.N. Protectorate of Kosovo.  StopVAW was developed with support from and in consultation with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Open Society Institute's Network Women's Program. This site addresses violence against women as one of the most pervasive human rights abuses worldwide. StopVAW provides women's rights advocates with information and advocacy tools focused on ending the most endemic forms of violence against women in the region, including domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment and trafficking in persons.

 

Current staff members of The Advocates for Human Rights involved with the development of StopVAW include, Mary Ellingen, Mary Ellison, Mary Hunt, Beatriz Menanteau, Rosalyn Park, Robin Phillips, and Cheryl Thomas. Current interns and volunteers include Casey Schultz, Katrina Viegas, Zoe Whaley and Sara Wilkinson.
