The image of women in advertising: yes to
freedom of expression, but without discrimination |
All too often, advertising
shows women in situations which are humiliating and degrading, or even
violent and offensive to human dignity. Moreover, by presenting slim women as
beauty idols, advertising can cause serious damage to the health of young
girls. After debating the various
issues, the Assembly adopted a resolution aimed at the adoption of legal,
self-regulatory and educational measures concerning advertising and a
recommendation calling for the conduct of an in-depth study of the image of
women and men in advertising. Parliamentarians called for
the preparation of a European code of good conduct and the introduction of a
European prize for advertising which breaks most effectively with sexist
stereotypes. _____________________________________________________________________ |
