Young Women Leaders |
The Young Women Leaders (YWL) program at the Lebanese American
University (LAU) aims to build the leadership skills of 20 women rights
activists from the Gulf States in 2009 and 2010. Participants’ travel,
accommodation, and program fees will be fully funded.
The program has two major components: the first is a women leadership capacity
building sessions offered during two consecutive summer modules at the Lebanese
American University (LAU) and delivered by its various institutes with a
leading role by the Institute for Women Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW). The
two summer Modules at LAU will be offered in 2009 and 2010 and will build
participants’ skills in women rights advocacy; each module is 14 days in
duration (first two weeks of August). Module II 2010 is concluded by a
three-day conference. Upon their graduation, participants will receive a Women
Rights Leadership Certificate.
The second component of the program consists of participants planning and
implementing small advocacy projects with other YWL from their own country
throughout the period separating the two summer modules. The small project aims
to raise awareness about key women issues and to promote women rights in the
community. The projects’ implementations are to be mentored by LAU faculty and
in-country partner organizations. Project evaluation and report are to be
presented by each country group during the consecutive summer leadership module
in Beirut and at a three day MENA regional conference. Costs associated with
the implementation and mentorship of the in-country small project will be
reimbursed by LAU.
The Conference will launch a Women Leadership Network (WLN) that includes YWL graduates
who in turn will become mentors for future YWL program participants.
