YWCAs Around the World Hold Vigil for Gaza & Call for Middle East Peace

When: January 8, 2009
Who: YWCAs Around the World
What: Candlelight Vigil to Call for Peace in the Middle East

YWCAs around the world will hold candlelight vigils on January 8 in commemoration of hundreds of lives lost in the recent crisis in Gaza and to call for peace in the Middle East. The campaign was initiated by the YWCA of Palestine in a statement released on December 29 in response to Israel's invasion of the Gaza strip.

The World YWCA is a global network of women and young women leading social and economic change in 125 countries. It advocates for peace, justice, human rights and care of the environment, and has been at the forefront of raising the status of women for over a century.

Women and children often bear the brunt of conflict and war. The World YWCA has a long history of responding to conflict and calling for peace with justice. Rooted in its policies from the 1920s, the World YWCA has emphasised peace education and justice as an integral part of the movement's promotion of human rights.

YWCAs in Fiji, Peru, Jordan, Brazil and many more are expected to hold vigils on January 8.
