Violence Against Women Questionnaire to UN Member States 

In September 2008, the Secretariat sent a questionnaire to all Member States seeking information for the violence against women database.  Member States are invited to submit available information by 4 January 2009.

What is the questionnaire?

The questionnaire is the primary tool for gathering information from Member States on measures undertaken to address violence against women.  This information will be used to create and maintain the coordinated database on violence against women.

When are responses due?

Member States are encouraged to submit their responses no later than 4 January 2009. Responses received after 4 January 2009, as well as any new or additional information will be used to update the database on an ongoing basis.

Who should contribute to the responses?

Member States are encouraged to consult all relevant entities, at different levels of government (federal, state, provincial, municipal and/or local), as well as different departments and agencies, including the national statistical office.  Member States are also encouraged to consult with other entities such as research organizations and service providers, when responding to the questionnaire.

What if information sought by the questionnaire is not currently available or needs updating?

If information sought by the questionnaire is not currently available, Member States are invited to submit the additional information to the Secretariat when it becomes available.  If information previously submitting needs updating, Member States are invited to provide these updates to the Secretariat as they occur.  This information will be used to update the database on an ongoing basis.

What is the role of the focal point(s)?

Member States are encouraged to identify a focal point(s) responsible for communicating with the Secretariat on any future matters related to the database, including providing DAW/DESA with updates regarding action undertaken to address violence against women, as they occur.  Member States may choose to appoint a government official or any other representative (for example from civil society or a research entity) to function as the focal point(s).
