Change to End Child Marriage Builds
in India
Change toward ending child marriage continues to build in India.
Last month, several key government officials from the Center for Budget
and Governance Accountability and the Ministry of Women and Child Development
met in Delhi with staff from ICRW’s Asia Regional Office and other local
nongovernmental organizations to discuss the social and economic costs of child
marriage and key findings and recommendations from the Knot Ready project
completed this past fall.
Participants agreed that more must be done in India to delay age of marriage,
especially for girls, and that the Knot Ready project’s findings on how to work
with girls and communities to bring about changes in social norms should be
used going forward.
A follow-up study with UNICEF will further refine the development community’s
understanding of the norms related to the practice of child marriage and how
best to address them in interventions to change the practice. This formative
research will be conducted in Rajasthan and Bihar in collaboration with the
Ministry of Women and Child Development. Findings from the combined research
will inform a pilot intervention program in the two states.
