Dear Friends of PWESCR

The next WORLD SOCIAL FORUM will take place in Belem, Brazil, from January 27th to February 1st 2009. Are you planning to participate in the World Social Forum (WSF) in 2009? What are you planning to do there? Are you interested in joining in the Struggles for Gender Equity Theme within the Human Dignity and Human Rights Caucus (HDHR)?

This WSF the HDHR Caucus - http://hdhrc.over-blog.com will focus its energies again around the following general themes:

  1. Human rights and struggles for social and economic justice
  2. Human rights and struggles for gender equity
  3. Human rights and struggles over habitat, land and environment
  4. Human rights, mobility and citizenship gap
  5. Human rights and conflict, militarization and culture of impunity
  6. Human rights and faith and cultural diversity

Where is the process at?

Rosa Sanchez is again coordinating the efforts of the Caucus - coordinationhdhrc@yahoo.com, with participating members of the core organizing group - HIC, ICCO, FIDH, FIAN, LWF, Equalinrights, PWESCR - supporting. The Caucus is open to new ideas about what it could do and would welcome any proposal / suggestion which would help advance the Caucus objectives.

We – equalinrights (The Netherlands) and PWESCR – The Programme for Women’s Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (India) have taken responsibility within the HDHR Caucus for mobilising a group focused on Gender Equity Struggles and Human Rights in preparation for the upcoming WSF in Belem.

I am sending you the concept note for Gender Equity theme. After several online chats and e discussions with over 70 organizations globally, there are three broad themes that have emerged. These are:

1. Livelihood, Development Displacement

2. Gender Dased Violence

3. Culture, Religion and Fundamentalisms

Gender Equity Group is plans to organize activities under these broad themes.

I also want to emphasis that not many of us will get to actually go to Brazil for various reasons. Not going to WSF should not stop us from joining the Caucus. You can consider organizing activities in your own country in line with WSF under Belem Expanded. http://openfsm.net/projects/club-belemexpanded and/or participate in various discussion that are currently taking place on several issues.

I look forward to hearing from you.
