Empowerment of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in the Andean Region

Lessons learned and recommendations from joint AECI-AIDS Alliance project participatory evaluation

	Women living with HIV/AIDS in the Andean region have poor access to services and little respect is shown to their rights. Furthermore, despite the recent increase in the number of cases in the region, the response from governments and other entities has been inadequate. The experience of the Alliance demonstrates that the best results are achieved by encouraging the active participation of people living with HIV/AIDS in the planning and implementation of programmes. Jointly with three linking organisations (LOs) – IDH, Vial Libre and Kimirina - and with the regional network of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW Latina), the Alliance proposed a second phase of the project in order to empower the response of women living with HIV in the Andean region to their situation. The project operates in three localities in Bolivia, two in Peru and three in Ecuador. These actions will involve interaction at international, national and local levels. At completion of the second stage, the materials and tools resulting from the process will be widely disseminated. The project will employ a rights-based perspective which will ensure that the principles enshrined in Sexual and Reproductive Rights enrich the work on HIV. lessons learned as a result of the experineces of women living with HIV working with Alliance partner organisations (Linking Organisations) and the national chapters of ICW Latina lessons learned on project implementation and joint activities involving the LOs and the national chapters of ICW Latina Recommendations for the design, implementation and management of the second phase of the project
