EU Experts on Violence Against Women to Visit Turkey

GENEVA -- In one of the first joint initiatives of its kind, the United Nations human rights expert on violence against women and the European Parliament's Rapporteur on Women's Rights in Turkey will visit Turkey to assess the quality of assistance and support provided by shelters for women who have been subjected to violence, including victims of trafficking.
The Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council on Violence against Women, its Causes and Consequences, Yakın Ertürk, and Dutch Member of the European Parliament and Parliamentary Rapporteur on Women's Rights in Turkey, Emine Bozkurt, will conduct an official visit to Turkey, at the invitation of the Government, from 31 October to 1 November 2008.
The experts will hold several meetings with Government authorities and civil society members with a view to gathering information on the situation of women within their respective mandates.
The findings of this visit will be included in the forthcoming annual report of the Special Rapporteur to the United Nations Human Rights Council and will inform the Parliamentary Delegation to Turkey. The outcome of the visit also will serve as a basis for a working paper of the European Parliament Women's Rights Committee as well as for a hearing on Women's Rights in Turkey that will take place in the European Parliament in early spring of 2009.
Yakin Ertürk, Professor of Sociology at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, was appointed Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women in 2003. She presents her thematic and country reports to the Human Rights Council and delivers oral presentations to the UN General Assembly and to the UN Commission on Status of Women.

Emine Bozkurt, Member of the European Parliament for the Netherlands since 2004, reports on the situation of women's rights in Turkey within the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee. She is a member of the Committee on Women's rights, the Justice and Civil Liberties Committee and the Joint Parliamentary Committee EU-Turkey.
