Dubai (in Arabic: دبيّ‎,) is one of the seven emirates and largest city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a Middle Eastern federation of seven states situated in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. The seven states, termed emirates, are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain.

DUBAI - Forum to Boost Women’s Share in Economic Uplift

Dubai — The Dubai School of Government (DSG), in cooperation with the Dubai Women’s Establishment (DWE), will hold the First Arab Women Leadership Forum in Dubai from January 13 to 14, 2009.

Themed “Women and Leadership: Global Trends and Local Innovations”, the event will be organised under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The forum will be led by Shaikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of  Dubai Women’s Establishment (DWE).

According to Maitha Al Shamsi, Managing Director of DWE, this is the first in a series of annual leadership international forums to be organised by DWE under its mandate of enhancing the contribution of working women in the economic and social development of the UAE.

“It also pursues a holistic objective of DWE to ensure that Emirati women play a key role not only on the local arena but also throughout the Gulf region.” She added that the DWE annual forum is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of outstanding individuals and organisations that have contributed to advancing women’s leadership worldwide.

Al Shamsi stated that having the DSG as DWE’s knowledge partner is a vital factor for the success of this pioneering conference on women’s leadership. “We believe that the experience and expertise of the DSG, especially their gender and public policy programme, will give us the opportunity to learn from leading women,” she stressed.

Dr May Al Dabbagh, Director of the Gender and Public Policy Programme at DSG, said that DSG is proud of its partnership with the DWE. “We are also looking forward to potential future collaborations, which will result in knowledge production and policy change in issues related to women.”

She explained: “The Gender and Public Policy Programme at the DSG aims to contribute to the academic scholarship on gender and public policy in the Arab world, while simultaneously incorporating gender perspectives in the training and education of leaders.
