11 WOMEN RUN FOR OFFICE IN AMERICAN SAMOA
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Sept. 4, 2008) – Eleven females will be on the November 4 ballot in American Samoa - the highest number of women candidates seeking public office in recent memory.
Two of the women - Aumua Amata and Rosie Tago Lancaster - are hoping to unseat incumbent Faleomavaega Eni, who is seeking his 10th consecutive two-year term as American Samoa’s non-voting Delegate to the U.S. Congress.
Rosie Lancaster, a military retiree, is a newcomer, but Aumua has tried previously to unseat Faleomavaega.
Nine women are vying for House seats, including two incumbents, Fiasili Puni Haleck and Mary Lauagaia Taufete’e.
