Professor Ruth Roded, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, deals in the social and cultural history of the Middle East: Her PhD and subsequent research was on    .Ottoman Syria.

 

 Forover a decade she has focused on gender. She has published a study of Women in Islamic Biographical Collections From Ibn Sa'd to Who's Who (1994), and an introductory reader on Women in Islam and the Middle East (1999), which will appear in a 2nd edition. In recent years, she has been working on a rather ambitious project on "Twentieth-Century Gendered Perceptions of the Biography of the Prophet Muhammed," case studies of which have appeared as articles. She is currently working on an analytic monograph tentatively titled “Muslim Women Transformed: Disseminating Islamic Gender Messages through Modern Perceptions of the Prophet Muhammad’s Life-Story.”

 

A Hebrew-language collection of original studies by Israeli researchers, " Women and Gender in the 20th Century Middle East," edited with Dr. Ngoa Efrati, will appear shortly. Ruth Roded has been a member of a number of national Middle Eastern studies associations and the international advisory board of Hawwa, the first scholarly journal devoted to Middle Eastern Gender Studies. She was elected to the World Council of the World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) whose second congress was hosted by the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies in Amman, Jordan, June, 2006. Ruth Roded also heads a research team "Gender Space and Forms of Domination in the Middle East and North Africa," at the Truman Institute for the Advancement of  Peace Research, where she is a Fellow.
