A class at the Mohammad Al Said Hamdeen high school in Algiers. After decades of forced Arabization, a movement has begun to reintroduce the study of subjects thought to offer more employable skills to students.....

 

Algeria won independence from France in 1962 and in an effort to forge a national identity free of Western influences, the school system adopted a new curriculum, including the teaching of Arabic, Islamic law, and the study of the Koran....

 

The Algerian government also sought to return to gender-mixed classes....
