SLEEPING BEAUTIES - BELLAS DURMIENTES

PROJECT & EXHIBIT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMICIDES

Spain - Expanding Globally

Sleeping Beauties is a collaborative project on domestic violence. A denunciation as well as a tribute to all women killed by their couples or ex couples since 2001 in Spain, Sleeping Beauties honors those women who never will wake up and remember us, we can´t forget the tragedy of their murders.

This project consists in involve the society to create actions, ceremonies or homages, based on self-adhesive posters showing a drawing of a bed with a pillow inscribed with a number asigned for a morder victim as well as the date and the motive of her death. There are 433 self adhesive posters: the reported number of deaths from 2001 to 2007. Sleeping Beauties will be presented at the 10th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women: WOMEN´S WORLD 2008 in a portable contemporary art center, created by Antimuseo, moving to different sites of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid campus. Documentation of all the actions will be exhibited in the show and the general public may participate in the exhibition, making new tributes and homages for the PCAC.

Sleeping Beauties invites our society to participate in the fight against gender violence. Any protest, any denunciation, any tribute, any activity as insignificant as it might seem, will always help to bring about change in our societies to help correct this problem.
